49ers injury report: CMC, Mitchell rested at practice appeared first on NBC Sports Bayarea

SANTA CLARA — The fitness of the 49ers’ 19-12 win over the Dallas Cowboys is evident with several players sitting out Wednesday’s practice.

Before the start of practice, coach Kyle Shanahan shared that several of the tight ends — including tight end Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel — would be out for the home game but are expected to play in the game Sunday’s NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.

“I expect it from them, but there are no guarantees,” Shanahan said. “Especially with the NFC Championship Game, I think there’s a better chance they’ll be ready since there’s nothing guaranteed after that. Let’s hope. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.”

Running back Elijah Mitchell did not participate in practice with a groin injury. Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) also sat out, and Shanahan said he doesn’t expect the veteran quarterback to practice this week.

Defensive end Charles Omenihu (side) and cornerback Ambrey Thomas (ankle) were limited.

Once practice opened, Samuel was seen on the field during the first part of practice for individual drills. Before practice, Shanahan shared that Samuel’s ankle injury wasn’t specific from Sunday’s division-round game against the Cowboys.

“He’s been there for a while,” Shanahan said. “I think he’ll be fine, but he kept us busy enough not to let him go today.”

In the win over the Cowboys, McCaffrey was on the field for 44 plays, or 67 percent of the offensive snaps. Mitchell carried the ball 14 times on his 22 snaps (33 percent). Both players suffered injuries in Sunday’s game, but returned to action.

McCaffrey and Mitchell were off the field during the open portion of practice. Their participation through the rest of the week will be a more accurate indication of their availability in the NFC Championship Game.

Trent Williams was not included in Shanahan’s initial report, but the left tackle was not on the field during the open portion of practice. The All-Pro likely gets his usual first week day off.
